Welcome to How Japan Brands

Your brand isn’t working as hard as your product.

You’ve built something people love. Sales are solid. But your brand? It’s a patchwork of decisions made under pressure — a logo from a freelancer, messaging that sounds like everyone else, no real story holding it together.

You know brand matters. But most brand strategy advice is either too abstract to act on or too generic to matter. You don’t need more theory. You need to see how it’s done.

Japan builds some of the most admired products on earth, backed by brand thinking most founders have never seen up close. This publication changes that.

This is for DTC founders who want to learn brand strategy by watching it work.

Who writes this?

I’m DLKR — a brand strategist who works directly with DTC founders. I help close the gap between a great product and an underbuilt brand through positioning, identity, and storytelling. Always in that order.

I’m a British-Australian who’s lived in Tokyo for nearly 30 years. I work inside a market that most US-based strategists can only reference from the outside. That distance is the point — outsiders see what insiders miss.

What you get

Free

Every week, I reverse-engineer a Japanese DTC brand that’s winning — and show you exactly why. Positioning, identity, and storytelling, broken down into principles you can use on your own brand today.

You’ll learn to see brands as systems — what holds them together, what makes them break. You’ll stop skipping steps. You’ll become a sharper buyer of creative services. And you’ll develop an eye for the difference between a brand that looks good and one that works.

Each post includes an audio version for when you’d rather listen.
